Upgrading ACL Analytics using silent upgrade

If you need to upgrade ACL Analytics on a large number of workstations, you can use silent upgrade to run the installer and the upgrade process without requiring user interaction. You can use silent upgrade for either a major or a minor upgrade, and with either the perpetual license or the subscription license model.

The installer file you use to perform the silent upgrade depends on whether the required software prerequisites are already installed on the target computers:

For a list of the software prerequisites, see ACL Analytics system requirements.

The two installer files are in the ACL Analytics installation package:

ACLAnalytics105_Desktop_<edition>.exe

Extracting the installer files

In order to access the installer files you need to download and run the ACL Analytics installation package to extract the two installer files. The ACL Analytics installation package is designed to automatically start the installation or upgrade process after the files are extracted. If you are using the silent upgrade option, you can click Cancel or No as soon as the files have been extracted. The default location for the extracted files is:

C:\Program Files\ACL Software\Installers\ACLAnalytics105_Desktop_<edition>

On computers running 64-bit operating systems the default program folder used by ACL Analytics is C:\Program Files (x86)\

Silent upgrade guidelines

Before beginning the silent upgrade, review Silent installation guidelines.

Performing a minor upgrade

The setup.exe installer file automatically detects whether an upgrade is major or minor. If you are using the ACL Analytics 10.msi installer file, and if you are performing a minor upgrade (10.5.0 to 10.5.1), you must specify three additional parameters: REINSTALL, REINSTALLMODE, and IS_MINOR_UPGRADE. The parameters are explained in greater detail in subsequent sections. You do not specify a serial number when performing a minor upgrade.

Upgrading a localized version of ACL Analytics

You can use an optional parameter to silently upgrade a localized version of ACL Analytics. For more information, see Installing a localized version of ACL Analytics.

Silent upgrade syntax

Use the following syntax to perform a silent upgrade of ACL Analytics. Specify the full path to setup.exe or ACL Analytics 10.msi and enclose the path in quotation marks if the path includes any spaces. Additional syntax guidelines, more detailed syntax examples, and optional parameters are provided in subsequent sections.

Using ACL Analytics 10.msi requires that you run the Windows command line as an administrator (right-click cmd.exe and select Run as administrator).

If you are performing a perpetual license upgrade on one or more computers that have a previously installed version of ACL Analytics you do not have to specify a serial number. The upgrade process uses the serial number or numbers from the previous installation. If the previous serial number is invalid for some reason, use the PIDKEY parameter to specify an updated, valid serial number.

Command line parameters

"setup_exe_path_and_filename"

If you are using the setup.exe installer file, specifies the network or local path to the file. Use this parameter if the required prerequisites have not yet been installed on the end user’s computer. The path must include the file name.

msiexec /i "msi_path_and_filename"

If you are using the ACL Analytics 10.msi installer file, specifies the network or local path to the file. Use this parameter if all prerequisites have already been installed on the end user’s computer. The path must include the file name.

/s

Specifies that setup.exe should run in silent mode. Use this parameter if prerequisites must be installed on the end user’s computer.

/L<language ID>

Specifies that setup.exe installs a localized version of ACL Analytics. If you omit this parameter, ACL Analytics uses the operating system language, or English if ACL Analytics does not support the operating system language.

/v

Specifies that parameter values will be passed to the installer. Do not include a space between /v and the first parameter. If more than one parameter follows /v the list of parameters must be enclosed in quotation marks.

/qr

Specifies that the installer runs in silent mode with a reduced user interface.

TRANSFORMS=language ID

Specifies that ACL Analytics 10.msi installs a localized version of ACL Analytics. If you omit this parameter, ACL Analytics uses English.

PIDKEY=valid serial number

If the previous serial number is invalid for some reason, specifies a valid serial number for performing the upgrade.

INSTALLDIR=path to ACL Analytics application files folder

Specifies the destination folder for application files. If you do not include this parameter in the silent installation syntax, the default location is used:

C:\Program Files\ACL Software\ACL Analytics 10

On computers running 64-bit operating systems the default location is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\ACL Software\ACL Analytics 10

DATADIR=path to sample data files folder

Specifies the destination folder for ACL sample data files, which is also the ACL Analytics working directory. If you do not include this parameter in the silent installation syntax, the default location is used: C:\ACL Data\Sample Data Files

Note

Make sure end users have read and write permissions to the data files folder you specify.

REINSTALL=ALL

Specifies that the parameters that were specified in the previous version of ACL Analytics will be applied in the upgrade. This parameter is valid only when performing a minor upgrade, and is required only when using ACL Analytics 10.msi.

REINSTALLMODE=vomus

Specifies that the upgrade reinstalls old files and overwrites existing registry entries. This parameter is valid only when performing a minor upgrade, and is required only when using ACL Analytics 10.msi.

IS_MINOR_UPGRADE=1

Specifies that the upgrade is a minor upgrade. This parameter is required only when using ACL Analytics 10.msi.
