Installing ACL Network using silent installation

If you need to deploy ACL Network to a large number of workstations, you can use silent installation to run the installer without requiring user interaction. You have the option of also installing ACL Workstation on the same computers as ACL Network.

The installer file you use to perform the silent installation depends on whether the required software prerequisites are already installed on the target computers:

For a list of the software prerequisites, see ACL Network and ACL Workstation system requirements.

The two installer files are in the ACL Network installation package:

ACLAnalytics105_Network_<edition>.exe

Extracting the installer files

In order to access the installer files you need to download and run the ACL Network installation package to extract the two installer files. The ACL Network installation package is designed to automatically start the installation process after the files are extracted. If you are using the silent installation option, you can click Cancel as soon as the files have been extracted. The default destination folder for the extracted files is:

C:\Program Files\ACL Software\Installers\ACLAnalytics105_Network_<edition>

On computers running 64-bit operating systems the default program folder used by ACL Network is C:\Program Files (x86)\

Incorporating the acl.ini software key in the silent installation

To avoid copying the acl.ini software key to each computer on which you install ACL Network, put a single copy of the software key file in the folder where you extracted the two installer files. If acl.ini is in this folder before you run the silent installation, the ACL Network installer automatically copies the file to the application executable directory, where the file is required in order for users to access and run ACL Network. For more information, see About the software key and the security directory.

If you have an older version of the software key file called aclnet.ini, and it is still valid, you can put this file, instead of acl.ini, in the folder where you extracted the two installer files.

Silent installation guidelines

Review and follow the guidelines below for entering the silent installation command syntax in the Windows command line. Not following any of the guidelines will cause the silent installation to fail.

Figure 1 below provides an example of silent installation command syntax in the Windows command line.

Installing a localized version of ACL Network

You can use an optional parameter to silently install a localized version of ACL Network – that is, a version that uses a language other than the language of the computer’s operating system.

To install a localized version, use the /L parameter with setup.exe, or the TRANSFORMS parameter with ACL Analytics 10.msi. You need to specify the appropriate language ID with each parameter. For example:

If you omit the language parameter, the installation defaults to the language of the computer’s operating system, or to English, depending on which installer file you use. The table below summarizes the behavior of the parameters and the installer files.

Parameter used

setup.exe

ACL Analytics 10.msi

TRANSFORMS

Silent installation syntax

Use the following syntax to perform a silent installation of ACL Network with default settings. Specify the full path to setup.exe or ACL Analytics 10.msi and enclose the path in quotation marks if the path includes any spaces. Additional syntax guidelines, more detailed syntax examples, and optional parameters are provided in subsequent sections.

ACL Network only

  • installs required software prerequisites

"setup_exe_path_and_filename" /s /v"/qr"

ACL Network only

  • required software prerequisites must already be installed

msiexec /i "msi_path_and_filename" /qr

ACL Network and ACL Workstation

  • installs required software prerequisites

"setup_exe_path_and_filename" /s /v"/qr INSTALLLEVEL=201"

ACL Network and ACL Workstation

  • required software prerequisites must already be installed

msiexec /i "msi_path_and_filename" INSTALLLEVEL=201 /qr

Syntax examples

Below are several examples of command line syntax for silently installing ACL Network. The first two examples include only the required parameters. The other examples include some additional optional parameters.

If you are installing ACL Network on computers running 64-bit operating systems, and you are specifying an installation directory rather than using the default location, substitute C:\Program Files (x86)\ for C:\Program Files\ in the examples below.

Command line parameters

"setup_exe_path_and_filename"

If you are using the setup.exe installer file, specifies the network or local path to the file. Use this parameter if the required prerequisites have not yet been installed on the end user’s computer. The path must include the file name.

msiexec /i "msi_path_and_filename"

If you are using the ACL Analytics 10.msi installer file, specifies the network or local path to the file. Use this parameter if all prerequisites have already been installed on the end user’s computer. The path must include the file name.

/s
Specifies that setup.exe should run in silent mode. Use this parameter if prerequisites must be installed on the end user’s computer.
/L<language ID>

Specifies that setup.exe installs a localized version of ACL Network. If you omit this parameter, ACL Network uses the operating system language, or English if ACL Network does not support the operating system language.

/v

Specifies that parameter values will be passed to the installer. Do not include a space between /v and the first parameter. If more than one parameter follows /v the list of parameters must be enclosed in quotation marks.

/qr

Specifies that the installer runs in silent mode with a reduced user interface.

TRANSFORMS=language ID

Specifies that ACL Analytics 10.msi installs a localized version of ACL Network. If you omit this parameter, ACL Network uses English.

INSTALLDIR=path to ACL Analytics application files folder

Specifies the destination folder for application files. If you do not include this parameter in the silent installation syntax, the default location is used: C:\ACL Software\ACL Analytics 10

INSTALLLEVEL=201

Use this parameter and a value of “201” to specify that ACL Workstation is also installed.

DATADIR=path to sample data files folder

This parameter is valid only if you also use the INSTALLLEVEL parameter to install ACL Workstation on the same computer as ACL Network. Specifies the destination folder for ACL sample data files, which is also the default ACL working directory. If you are installing ACL Workstation on the same computer as ACL Network and you do not include this parameter, the default sample data files location is used: C:\ACL Data\Sample Data Files.

Note

Make sure that end users have read and write permissions to the sample data files folder you specify.
