Upgrading ACL Network using silent upgrade

If you need to upgrade ACL Network on a large number of workstations, you can use silent upgrade to run the installer and the upgrade process without requiring user interaction. You can use silent upgrade for either a major or a minor upgrade.

The installer file you use to perform the silent upgrade depends on whether the required software prerequisites are already installed on the target computers:

For a list of the software prerequisites, see ACL Network and ACL Workstation system requirements.

The two installer files are in the ACL Network installation package:

ACLAnalytics105_Network_<edition>.exe

Upgrading ACL Workstation

If ACL Workstation is on the same computer as ACL Network, and if it was previously installed as part of the ACL Network installation, you can use the INSTALLLEVEL parameter to upgrade it as part of the ACL Network upgrade. The parameter is explained in greater detail in subsequent sections.

If ACL Workstation was separately installed on the same computer as ACL Network, it must be separately upgraded. In the Windows listing of installed programs, if ACL Network and ACL Workstation appear as two separate entries (ACL Analytics 10 and ACL Analytics 10 WS) the two applications were separately installed and will need to be separately upgraded.

For information about separately upgrading ACL Workstation, see Upgrading ACL Workstation using silent upgrade.

Extracting the installer files

In order to access the installer files you need to download and run the ACL Network installation package to extract the two installer files. The ACL Network installation package is designed to automatically start the installation or upgrade process after the files are extracted. If you are using the silent upgrade option, you can click Cancel or No as soon as the files have been extracted.The default destination folder for the extracted files is:

C:\Program Files\ACL Software\Installers\ACLAnalytics105_Network_<edition>

On computers running 64-bit operating systems the default program folder used by ACL Network is C:\Program Files (x86)\

Incorporating the acl.ini software key in the silent upgrade

If you are using a newly issued acl.ini software key to upgrade ACL Network, you can avoid copying the software key to each computer on which you upgrade ACL Network by putting a single copy of the software key in the folder where you extracted the two installer files. For more information, see Incorporating the acl.ini software key in the silent installation.

If you are using your current acl.ini software key to upgrade ACL Network, the installer attempts to copy the current key file to the 10.5.1 application executable folder. If this process fails for any reason, you can still manually copy a valid acl.ini software key to the 10.5.1 application executable folder.

If both a newly issued and a current key file are present on the computer on which you are installing ACL Network, the newly issued key file takes precedence if it is located in the folder containing the installer files.

Silent upgrade guidelines

Before beginning the silent upgrade, review Silent installation guidelines.

Performing a minor upgrade

The setup.exe installer file automatically detects whether an upgrade is major or minor. If you are using the ACL Analytics 10.msi installer file, and if you are performing a minor upgrade (10.5.0 to 10.5.1), you must specify three additional parameters: REINSTALL, REINSTALLMODE, and IS_MINOR_UPGRADE. The parameters are explained in greater detail in subsequent sections.

Upgrading a localized version of ACL Network

You can use an optional parameter to silently upgrade a localized version of ACL Network. For more information, see Installing a localized version of ACL Network.

Silent upgrade syntax

Use the following syntax to perform a silent upgrade of ACL Network. Specify the full path to setup.exe or ACL Analytics 10.msi and enclose the path in quotation marks if the path includes any spaces. Additional syntax guidelines, more detailed syntax examples, and optional parameters are provided in subsequent sections.

Using ACL Analytics 10.msi requires that you run the Windows command line as an administrator (right-click cmd.exe and select Run as administrator).

setup.exe

  • installs required software prerequisites

"setup_exe_path_and_filename" /s /v"/qr"

ACL Analytics 10.msi

  • required software prerequisites must already be installed

msiexec /i "msi_path_and_filename" /qr

setup.exe

  • installs required software prerequisites

  • upgrades both ACL Network and ACL Workstation

"setup_exe_path_and_filename" /s /v"/qr INSTALLLEVEL=201"

ACL Analytics 10.msi

  • required software prerequisites must already be installed

  • minor upgrade

msiexec /i "msi_path_and_filename" REINSTALL=ALL
REINSTALLMODE=vomus IS_MINOR_UPGRADE=1 /qr

Command line parameters

"setup_exe_path_and_filename"

If you are using the setup.exe installer file, specifies the network or local path to the file. Use this parameter if the required prerequisites have not yet been installed on the end user’s computer. The path must include the file name.

msiexec /i "msi_path_and_filename"

If you are using the ACL Analytics 10.msi installer file, specifies the network or local path to the file. Use this parameter if all prerequisites have already been installed on the end user’s computer. The path must include the file name.

/s
Specifies that setup.exe should run in silent mode. Use this parameter if prerequisites must be installed on the end user’s computer.
/L<language ID>

Specifies that setup.exe installs a localized version of ACL Network. If you omit this parameter, ACL Network uses the operating system language, or English if ACL Network does not support the operating system language.

/v

Specifies that parameter values will be passed to the installer. Do not include a space between /v and the first parameter. If more than one parameter follows /v the list of parameters must be enclosed in quotation marks.

/qr

Specifies that the installer runs in silent mode with a reduced user interface.

TRANSFORMS=language ID

Specifies that ACL Analytics 10.msi installs a localized version of ACL Network. If you omit this parameter, ACL Network uses English.

INSTALLLEVEL=201

Use this parameter and a value of “201” to specify that ACL Workstation is also upgraded.

REINSTALL=ALL

Specifies that the parameters that were specified in the previous version of ACL Network will be applied in the upgrade. This parameter is valid only when performing a minor upgrade, and is required only when using ACL Analytics 10.msi.

REINSTALLMODE=vomus

Specifies that the upgrade reinstalls old files and overwrites existing registry entries. This parameter is valid only when performing a minor upgrade, and is required only when using ACL Analytics 10.msi.

IS_MINOR_UPGRADE=1

Specifies that the upgrade is a minor upgrade. This parameter is required only when using ACL Analytics 10.msi.
