Using Windows shortcuts to open ACL projects and run scripts

You can create shortcuts in Microsoft Windows which can be run by double-clicking an icon. With custom shortcuts, you can automatically load an ACL project, initialize variables, or run a script. Custom shortcuts include the path name of the ACL executable file and parameters such as the ACL project name, variables, and scripts.

The following syntax is used to specify the shortcut:

acl_executable acl_project_name </vVarName=value> </bScript_name> </min>

To create a shortcut to ACL:

  1. Right-click the Windows desktop and select New > Shortcut. Windows displays the Create Shortcut dialog box.
  2. Click Browse, locate the ACL executable (aclwin.exe), and click Open. The default location is “C:\Program Files\ACL Software\ACL <version>\ACLWin.exe” where <version> is the installed version of ACL.
  3. To open a particular ACL project when ACL starts, enter a space after the executable path and then enter the project filename. If the project is not in the ACL working directory (e.g., C:\ACL Data\Sample Data Files), you must enter the full path to the ACL project file. The path must be enclosed in double quotes.
  4. To initialize variables when opening an ACL project, enter the /v switch followed immediately by the variable name and the value you want to assign to it. Do not enter a space between /v and the variable. For example, to initialize two variables, Auditor and Materiality, you need to specify the following after the ACL project filename:

    /vAuditor="John Chen" /vMateriality=10000

  5. To execute a script when opening an ACL project, enter the /b switch followed immediately by the script name. Do not enter a space between /b and the name of the script. For example, to launch a script named Find_duplicates, you need to specify the following after the ACL project filename and any variables you have defined: /bFind_duplicates
  6. To start ACL in a minimized window, specify the /min switch after any other switches you are specifying.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Enter a name for the shortcut in the text box.
  9. Click Finish.
