Creating ODBC data sources in ACL

When you define an ACL table from an ODBC data source, you will typically select an existing data source to connect to that you have previously configured, or that your IT department has created for you. In most cases, ODBC data sources should be created outside of ACL, but you can create new data sources in the Data Definition Wizard as you define your ACL table if you know all of the required connection information.

To create a new ODBC data source connection:

  1. Select File > New > Table.
  2. If the Select Platform for Data Source page is displayed, select Local and click Next.
  3. In the Select Local Data Source page, select ODBC and click Next.

The Select Data Source dialog box is displayed. You can either select File DSN or Machine DSN.

  4. If you want to create a File Data Source, complete the following steps in the Select Data Source dialog box:
    1. Select the File Data Source tab and click New.
    2. In Create New Data Source, select the appropriate driver and click Next.
    3. Enter a name for the DSN file and click Next. If necessary, you can click Browse and select the local folder or network location where the file should be stored.
    4. Click Finish.

A dialog box is displayed for you to complete any additional information required by the ODBC driver you are using. The dialog box is specific to the driver you are using.

  5. If you want to create a Machine Data Source, complete the following steps in the Select Data Source dialog box:
    1. Select the Machine Data Source tab and click New.
    2. Select one of the following:
      • User Data Source – The data source is specific to the computer you create it on and your user account.

      • Machine Data Source – The data source is specific to the computer you create it on, but can be accessed by any user that logs on to the machine. Machine data sources can also be used by Windows Services.

    3. Click Next.
    4. In Create New Data Source, select the appropriate driver and click Next.
    5. Click Finish.

A dialog box is displayed for you to complete any additional information required by the ODBC driver you are using. The dialog box is specific to the driver you are using.

  6. After the new ODBC data source is created, select it and complete the remaining steps required to define the ACL table. For more information, see Defining ODBC data sources.
