Bar chart

The bar chart uses two or three data dimensions, or variables, to show comparisons between categories, or between sub-categories. Categories are non-quantitative data elements such as customers, vendors, departments, branches, merchant category codes, transaction types, statuses, and so on.

The bar chart in Figure 1 uses two data dimensions to compare the total transaction amount for each customer. The bar chart in Figure 2 uses three data dimensions to compare the total transaction amount for each customer, broken down by transaction type.

Table 1 provides additional details about bar chart configuration settings.

Setting

Data types supported

Example field

Description

X-Axis

(horizontal)

Character

Customer Number

Specifies the field that provides the categories represented by bars on the horizontal axis.

One bar is created for each unique value in the field, or each unique combination of values if you also specify a Color by field.

Y-Axis

(vertical)

Numeric

Amount

Specifies the field to use as the basis for the chart’s vertical scale.

The total of all values in the field for each category, or sub-category, determines the height of each bar.

Total (sum) is the default aggregation option. The Y-Axis field also supports average, minimum, maximum, or count aggregation options. For more information see About visualizations.

Color by

(optional setting)

Character

Customer Number

Transaction Type

Specifies the field to use to add a third data dimension to the chart.

Adding a third data dimension can sub-divide X-Axis categories. You can think of the Color by field as a break field.

The Color by setting provides the following options:

  • If you omit a Color by field, X-Axis categories are not sub-divided and all bars are the same color.

  • If you specify the same field for Color by and X-Axis, X-Axis categories are not sub-divided and bars are differentiated by color.

  • If you specify different fields for Color by and X-Axis, X-Axis categories are broken down by the values in the Color by field, differentiated by color.
