Line chart

The line chart typically uses two or three data dimensions, or variables, to show or compare trends or changes over time for one or more categories. Categories are non-quantitative data elements such as customers, vendors, departments, branches, merchant category codes, transaction types, statuses, and so on. A single, quantitative category can also be plotted using a line chart.

The line chart in Figure 1 uses two data dimensions to show total daily transaction amount. The line chart in Figure 2 uses three data dimensions to compare the total daily transaction amount for each customer.

Table 1 provides additional details about line chart configuration settings.

Data types supported

Example field

Transaction Date

Specifies the field to use as the basis for the chart’s horizontal scale. Typically, a date field is used as the basis for the X-Axis.

Specifies the field to use as the basis for the chart’s vertical scale.

The position of data points on the vertical scale determines the height of each line. The height of a line is interpolated if a data point is missing.

Total (sum) is the default aggregation option. The Y-Axis field also supports average, minimum, maximum, or count aggregation options. For more information see About visualizations.

Color by

(optional setting)

Customer Number

Specifies the field to use to add a third data dimension to the chart.

Adding a third data dimension creates the categories represented by lines. A separate line is created for each unique value in the field.

The Color by setting provides the following options:

  • If you omit a Color by field, a single line representing all categories is displayed on the chart.

  • If you specify a Color by field, separate lines, differentiated by color, are displayed for each unique value in the field.
