Managing intensity metrics through KPIs
Intensity Metrics describe the extent to which a business's activities are based on carbon output for a defined scope and fiscal year. The metrics functionality allows the user to define the Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for the organization which is used to calculate the intensity for that metric. Metrics are set at a building or asset level, and calculated across all activities which are associated with that building or asset.
In the system there is the ability to create organizational wide and site specific KPI’s. Examples of KPI's include:
- Headcount
- Floorspace
- Unit produced
- 1000 Capsules
- Unit Processed
- Tonne Produced
- Kg Produced
- Widget
- $ Revenue
- £ Revenue
- Visit
- Overnight Stay
- Visitor
- Day (Charged)
- Hour (Charged)
- Room
- Tonnes of Waste Collected
- Turnover (Euro Millions)
- Turnover (£ Millions)
- Million Litres of Fuel Delivered (Own Fleet)
- Tonnes of LPG sold (Own Fleet Only).
New KPI's can be made available on request.
Configuring a key performance metric
-
Select Analysis and select Key Performance Metrics.
-
In the Organisation tab, select an organization that the new KPI will apply to, select Add New Metric.
-
In the Organisational Level dropdown, select the level that you want to configure the KPI at. In the Organisation / Building and Organisation Path column filter field, enter a filter term and select the filter parameters to filter the results further.
-
Select Select beside the organization, building, or company that you want to configure the KPI for.
-
In the Configuration tab, select the metric type.
-
In the Metric Name, Metric MappingID, and Description field, enter a descriptive name, ID, and description. The Metric Mapping ID is the unique identifier assigned to the KPI. When configuring a KPI manually you can create this ID similar to other mapping IDs. The system uses this ID to direct the data to respective KPI (activity) and site. You also use it to upload KPI data in bulk.
-
Select Save.
-
Select the Data tab to add a metric record to the new KPI. For further information about adding data to a KPI, go to Adding data to a KPI.
Note
You can also use the column filter fields to search for an existing KPI you want to edit or add data to.
Note
If there is a metric type that you want included in this list, contact the Support team.
Adding data to a KPI
-
Select Analysis and select Key Performance Metrics.
-
Use the Organisation tab and use the column filter fields to search for an existing KPI you want to edit or add data to.
-
Select Select beside the metric that you want to add data to.
-
In the Data tab, in the Start Date and End Date fields, enter the date range that this metric applies to. For example, if a new 10,000 sq meter block was added to the building in June, set up one metric record covering until May 31st and a second metric record from June 31st with the increased floor area. Another example is if staff numbers change frequently, you could create a metric record for each quarter or each month.
-
In the Units dropdown, select the unit type that best suits your KPI.
-
In the Value field, enter the value, for example, the headcount or floor area number for that date period.
-
Select Save.
Creating KPIs in bulk
-
Select Analysis and select Key Performance Metrics.
-
Select Bulk Import Metrics.

-
(Optional) Select the Discard first number of data rows checkbox and enter the number of rows if you want to ignore certain rows in the spreadsheet.
-
Select Continue.
-
In the Column mapping tab, in the Selected sheet dropdown, select the sheet in the file that you want to import.
