Configuring risk heatmaps

Configure risk heatmaps to present the results of a risk assessment.

How it works

There is one default risk heatmap in the Strategy app that shows the correlation between the following attributes:

  • X-axis likelihood
  • Y-axis impact
  • Color inherent risk heat
  • Size inherent risk score

You can customize the value of each of the four dimensions, and create additional risk heatmaps that present the results of a risk assessment in different ways.

Customizable values

Category Description Values
Risk Scoring Factors Attributes that have an impact on the achievement of objectives within a company
  • Impact
  • Likelihood
  • Custom Risk Scoring Factors
Risk Assessment An evaluation of potential risks in the company
  • Inherent Risk Heat
  • Inherent Risk Score
  • Residual Risk Heat
  • Residual Risk Score
Risk Treatment Aggregated information that describes how well risks are being mitigated and the associated costs with each risk
  • Assurance
  • Cost Impact
Note

If you view a past state of risks using Time Machine, Assurance and Cost Impact cannot be calculated.

Permissions

Strategy Admins and Oversight Executives can edit existing risk heatmaps and save new risk heatmaps. Strategy Admins and Oversight Executives can delete Risk Heatmaps, except for the default risk heatmap.

Oversight Reviewers can only view risk heatmaps.

Navigate to a risk heatmap

  1. Open the Strategy app.
  2. Click Heatmaps.
  3. Select the appropriate risk heatmap from the dropdown list.

    The selected risk heatmap opens.

    Tip

You can quickly switch to another risk heatmap using the dropdown list next to Save.

Change the values on a risk heatmap

Using the dropdown lists above the visualization, define any of the following dimensions:

  • X-axis
  • Y-axis
  • Color
  • Size

The same value can be used more than once. The risk heatmap automatically updates with the applied values.

Caution

If you delete a Risk Scoring Factor that is used in a risk heatmap, the risk heatmap will not display.

Zoom in and out on a risk heatmap

You can change the scale of the x and y-axes on risk heatmaps using the Zoom In | Out option above the visualization.

  • In the axes on the risk heatmap end after the highest assessed values.
  • Out the axes on the risk heatmap show the full 0-100%.

Filter a risk heatmap

You can filter the data on risk heatmaps based on inherent risk, keywords, tags, strategic objectives, operating segments, or a point in time.

  1. From any risk heatmap, click Filters, above the visualization.
  2. Use the options that appear to set up one or more filters.
    • Inherent Risk Heat filters risks by inherent risk heat. The grey portion of the scale indicates the minimum and maximum values to display. For example, you can adjust the endpoints of the scale to show all risks that have inherent risk heat between 50% - 70%.
    • Keywords/Tags filters risks by tags associated with a risk or by keyword search.
    • State filters risks by state.
    • Strategic Objectives and Operating Segments filter risks by the strategic objectives and operating segments defined in your Strategy Map.

      Note

      • Interface terms are customizable, and fields and tabs are configurable. In your instance of Diligent One, some terms, fields, and tabs may be different.
      • If a required field is left blank, you will see a warning message: This field is required. Some custom fields may have default values.
    • Time Machine allows you to view the state of risks at a particular point in time. The risk heatmap displays in read-only format and cannot be edited.
      Note

Assurance and Cost Impact cannot be calculated when using the Time Machine. If the risk heatmap had a different configuration in the past (for example X-axis used to be Impact, and now X-axis is Likelihood), the historical risk data will display, but the previous configuration will not.

Save a risk heatmap

Do one of the following:

Task Steps Result
Save a new risk heatmap
  1. Do one of the following:
    • If you are saving the risk heatmap for the first time, click Save As.
    • If you want to make a copy of a risk heatmap that was previously saved, click More... > Save As.

      The Save As form opens.

  2. Enter a name for the risk heatmap.
  3. Click Save.
A copy of the risk heatmap is created and saved as a new risk heatmap.
Save an existing risk heatmap Click Save. Any changes to the risk heatmap are saved.

Rename a risk heatmap

  1. Open the Strategy app.
  2. Click Heatmaps.
  3. Select the appropriate risk heatmap from the dropdown list.

    The selected risk heatmap opens.

  4. Click More...
  5. Select Rename.

The Rename Heatmap dialog box opens.

  6. Enter a name for the risk heatmap.

    The character limit is 60.

  7. Click Rename.

    The risk heatmap is renamed.

Export a risk heatmap to .pdf

Export a risk heatmap to PDF format so you can print them or add them to presentations and reports.

  1. Open the Strategy app.
  2. Click Heatmaps.
  3. Select the appropriate risk heatmap from the dropdown list.

    The selected risk heatmap opens.

  4. Click Download PDF.

The report is generated and displayed in a new browser window.

  5. Download the file to your computer.

The file is saved as <Risk heatmap name>.pdf. Any applied filters are retained in the PDF.

If your risk heatmap contains overlapping bubbles, small black circles are added to the heatmap and the corresponding legend entry.

  • Letter: indicates the cluster of overlapping risks.
  • Number: indicates the number of overlapping risks in this cluster.

Delete a risk heatmap
