Discrete assets in Asset Manager

The assets imported from Tenable are called discrete assets. Discrete assets can be host assets, cloud resources, web applications, and domain inventory. For example: Laptops, desktops, servers, and routers.

Important

Discrete assets should not be confused with aggregated assets that are created and managed in Asset Manager. Aggregated assets are collections of individual assets grouped together based on specific criteria for the purpose of reporting, analysis, and management. For example: Bangalore office assets, Finance dept assets.

Viewing all discrete assets

Prerequisite

Before viewing discrete assets, ensure you have imported data from Tenable. For information about importing, see Importing Tenable data into Asset Manager.

  1. Open the Asset Manager app.
  2. On the left hand side, select the expand button to open the side panel.
  3. Select VulnerabilitiesVulnerability details > Discrete Assets tab.

Result The discrete asset list is displayed with active assets, their details, findings, and related CVEs. You can select any of the items to go to their respective pages.

Linking discrete assets to aggregated assets

You can link discrete assets from Tenable to aggregated assets in Asset Manager. This creates a hierarchical relationship where individual (discrete) assets are grouped into broader (aggregated) categories based on certain criteria, and it can offer several advantages both in terms of management and security.

For example:

Asset Type: IT Asset - Software

Aggregated Asset: Database Management System (DBMS)

Discrete Assets: Oracle Database Server Version 12c

  1. Open the Asset Manager app.
  2. On the left hand side, select the expand button to open the side panel.
  3. Select VulnerabilitiesVulnerability details > Discrete Assets tab.
  4. Select the checkbox of the discrete asset that you want to link, and select Link Aggregated Asset.

    Tip

You can select multiple assets at once to link them. To select all assets at once, use the checkbox in the header row.

  5. In the Link Assets dialog, select the asset type and the asset name.
  6. Select Link.

Result The discrete asset is linked to the aggregated asset, and a success message appears.

After linking

After linking, the discrete asset is updated with the following information: Aggregated Asset Name, Asset Type, Aggregated Asset ID, and Asset Criticality. Asset Criticality is required for calculating SLA of related findings. You can click on the Aggregated Asset Name or Asset Type to navigate to their respective pages.

Viewing linked discrete assets

Prerequisite

Before viewing, ensure that you have linked the discrete assets to the aggregated assets.

  1. Open the Asset Manager app.
  2. Select the asset type that contains the asset you want to view.
  3. Select the asset that you want to view and select Discrete Assets.

Result The linked discrete assets are displayed.
Each discrete asset contains the following details: Aggregated Asset, Asset Type, Findings, and CVEs. You can select any of the items to go to their respective pages.
