Linking metrics to risks

You can link metrics from the Results app to risks in the Strategy app to help inform the risk assessment. Metrics can be used to track, monitor, and assess risk.

Before you start

Before you can link metrics to risks, you need to:

  • create a metric in Results
  • add a risk to the Risk Profile in Strategy

For more information on creating metrics, see Monitoring key indicators with metrics.

How it works

A metric is a calculation that you label as a specific type of key indicator. Key indicators are quantitative measurements of success (KPI, KCI) or risk (KRI) that are associated with an organization's objectives.

When you link a metric to a risk, you are able to view the metric in Strategy. When you unlink a metric from a risk, the metric can no longer be viewed in Strategy.

Example

KRI: Top talent loss

Scenario

You need to track a top talent loss risk to understand whether your company is within a certain threshold related to its risk appetite. The threshold of risk appetite indicates the amount of risk your company is willing to accept.

Your company sets a threshold of 10 employees leaving the company per quarter. As part of your duties, you must monitor the risk on an ongoing basis and report any quarters where more than 10 employees have left.

Process

To monitor this threshold, you configure a Key Risk Indicator in Results by:

  1. Filtering the metric data on employees that have been off-boarded, so that only these employees are measured.
  2. Setting the metric calculation period to quarterly.
  3. Creating a Count metric that calculates the number of employees leaving the company that are greater than 10.
  4. Setting the metric threshold to greater than 10.

To display the metric in Strategy, you link the metric to the top talent risk in your risk profile.

Result

If the number of employees leaving the company per quarter exceeds your threshold, the metric indicates that the threshold has been exceeded.

Tip

You can set up triggers to notify key stakeholders when a metric falls below or exceeds a threshold. For more information, see Triggering automated activity.

Note

You cannot link metrics from archived collections in Results. If you previously linked a metric, and archived the collection in Results where the metric is located, the metric is protected in a read-only state.

  1. Click the Metrics tab.
  2. Click Link Metrics.

    A list of metrics displays.

  3. Optional. Search for a metric by entering a keyword or phrase in the search box.
  4. Select the appropriate metric(s).
  5. Click Save.

Each metric displays. Metrics display in alphabetical order, based on the metric name.

  6. Optional. Add a description to the metric to explain the significance of the calculation.
  7. Optional. To link additional metrics to the risk, click Link Metrics and repeat steps 3-6.
  8. Click Done.

View metric details

  1. Click the Metrics tab.
  2. Hover your mouse over the appropriate metric and click View Data. The metric opens in Results.

Unlink a metric from a risk
